What impact did Jesus leave on science? How did Jesus influence Western culture? What impact did he leave on pop culture?

There are many reasons that it is important to understand and be aware of the impact Jesus left on society, science, and culture. Here, we will examine some of the reasons that it is so important to understand how Jesus had influenced society.

Science and Christianity

Culturally, there is this idea that science and Christianity are at odds. That Christianity will crumble upon the first inkling of scientific examinations. We have decided to use science as a weapon that should, and indeed already has, been the death of God.

In contradiction to this assumption frequently taught and passed around in Western society today, science needed Jesus to get it where it is today. Why is that? The contributions that Jesus’s followers have made to science, in pursuit of truth, have led the humanity into fields of science otherwise unreachable. The implications of Jesus life, death, and teachings drove Christians to study the world and the universe for millennia after his death. Seen as an act of worship and exploration of the world created by the Creator, Christians would go on to found hundreds of fields of science and be responsible for some of the greatest technological and scientific advances the world would see.

Therefore, while we have decided to place science and Christianity at odds with each other, we don’t realize this statement is kind of contradictory. Sure, there are scientists that interpret evidence as not aligning with certain Biblical interpretations or ideas of God, but where would science be without Jesus? We don’t know.

Science needs Jesus, without him it would never have exploded as it has.

Western Society

Western culture has recently decided to criticize Jesus and his teachings. Nothing brand new, but the strength with which we claim Jesus is immoral has grown over the years.

In the eyes of some in the West, Jesus has become immoral and problematic. We like to say that Christianity is intolerant, restrictive, and unnecessarily prohibits pleasurable actions. We say that Christianity doesn’t align with our ideals of diversity, freedom, and love. When we stop to think, where do these ideals come from?

In fact, we run into much the same issue as when we use science to criticize Jesus. When we use Western ideals to criticize Jesus, we must ask the question where Western civilization came from? Yet again, the answer is Jesus. Western culture and ideals are without question built on the teachings and life of Jesus. The Bible’s teachings about equality, love, freedom, and preservation of life are the tenants on which all of Western civilization was founded and developed.

While we often get these ideals wrong, when we use ideals such as equality, love, and freedom to criticize Jesus, we run into another self contradiction. We are using something that needs Jesus, to criticize Jesus. See why that doesn’t make a ton of sense?

Pop Culture

No single person has impacted popular culture as much as Jesus has. No one has more movies, songs, books, poems, paintings, or statues built in their honor than Jesus.

In fact, some of the most famous characters and franchises in pop culture history have been heavily laden with Biblical themes. This is one reason that it is really important to understand Jesus’s impact on society.

In Western culture, some of us think that we are at odds with Jesus on things. Without actually reading the Bible and finding out, we have been fed assumptions about what Jesus taught that we let go unquestioned. However, when we look at the Biblical themes in pop culture, we find that we are invariably in favor of team Bible.

What does this mean? Only the main stuff makes it into pop culture. Such as good vs. evil, sacrifice, love, and truth; these are all Biblical themes that are often used in pop culture. And, when we witness these themes in pop culture, I’m willing to bet we agree with them and root for them 10 times out of 10.

For example, how many times have you seen a movie where the good guy sacrifices himself at the end of the movie to save others? Alot? Why is that? Because it appeals to us, it is a virtuous act that we can all get behind. Sound familiar?

Upcoming Series

In our upcoming series, we will be examining each of these in depth. It is important to understand how Jesus impacted society. This is important because it helps us understand that some of the ways in which we criticize Jesus don’t really hold up. It also shows us that Jesus must have done something VERY significant to leave this sort of impact, something miraculous perhaps? Finally, it helps us understand some of the underlying beliefs that we hold as we investigate this idea of Jesus, and that these underlying beliefs very well may have come from Jesus himself.
